Peak Climbing Permits & Expedition Royalty Fees
The Department of Tourism (DoT) oversees permits for peaks above 6,500m, including Mount Everest and other 8,000m peaks. Permit fees vary depending on the mountain, the climbing season, and group size.
Upcoming Changes (Effective September 1, 2025):
Mount Everest Permit Fees:
Spring (March–May): Increasing from $11,000 to $15,000 per climber.
Autumn (September–November): Increasing from $5,500 to $7,500 per climber.
Winter/Monsoon (December–February, June–August): Increasing from $2,750 to $3,750 per climber.
New Regulations:
Climbers must carry biodegradable waste bags.
For peaks over 8,000m, every two climbers must hire one guide.
Enhanced insurance coverage for Sherpas and support staff.
Current Fee Structure for Peaks Above 6,500m:
Mount Everest (South Side - Nepal Route)
Spring: $11,000 per climber.
Autumn: $5,500 per climber.
Winter/Summer: $2,750 per climber.
Other Peaks Above 8,000m
Spring: $1,800 per climber.
Autumn: $900 per climber.
Winter/Summer: $450 per climber.
Peaks between 6,501m–7,999m
Spring: $500 per climber.
Autumn: $250 per climber.
Winter/Summer: $125 per climber.
Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) Trekking Peaks (Under 6,500m)
The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) manages trekking peaks below 6,500m, ideal for beginner and intermediate climbers due to their easier access and less technical requirements.
Fee Structure:
Group A Peaks (e.g., Island Peak, Mera Peak):
Permit Fee: $250 for up to 4 climbers + $40 for each additional climber.
Group B Peaks (e.g., Yala Peak, Pisang Peak):
Permit Fee: $70 for up to 4 climbers + $20 for each additional climber.
Liaison Officer (LO) Fees
Expeditions on peaks over 8,000m require a Liaison Officer (LO) to monitor safety and compliance. The LO fee is shared among group members.
Mount Everest: $3,000 per expedition.
Other 8,000m Peaks: $2,000–$2,500 per expedition.
Refundable Garbage Deposit
Nepal enforces strict waste management rules to protect the fragile mountain environment. Teams must deposit funds as a guarantee for proper garbage disposal.
Mount Everest: $4,000 per expedition.
Other 8,000m Peaks: $3,000 per expedition.
Peaks Below 8,000m: $500–$2,000, depending on the peak.
Refunds are granted upon confirmation that all waste has been brought back
